UGC, MGC, LOL, OMG... Ugh! What is up with all these stupid acronyms? Why can't people just say it? User Generated Content, American Broadcasting Company, Turner Network Television, Secure Socket Layer, etc.
Anyway, that was my "three week to the end of the semester" rant. Kinda short but oh well. Where was I? Oh right, UGC (grrr....), to me, is icing on the cake for a lot of programs. Some of the best examples of user generated content can be seen in computer games like The Sims and The Sims 2, Half-Life and Half-Life 2 (mainly through the online battle simulation Team Fortress) and even some MMORPGs like Star Wars Galaxies. DISCLAIMER: I haven't played computer games in a long time so forgive me for my out of date examples. In fact, companies like Maxis (developers of the Sims series) and its parent company Electronic Arts, have an entire site devoted to user generated content for some of their games.
This content really provides a great way for some people to be discovered (similarly to SecondLife only not as lame) and it adds a personal touch to the game. Games like The Sims and The Sims 2 (these games are simulation games that focus on living out a virtual life) work best when a ton of new content (like clothes, furniture, cars, building materials, etc.) is created to expand the game. Sure, official expansion packs like Sims 2: Pets, "": Vacation, "": Hot Date all provide a lot of fun new content and animations but there is still something quaint about using (forgive me) UGC.

You brought up an interesting and not previously mentioned aspect of *UGC*: UGC game content.
I had almost completely forgotten to include that in my thought process. I used to play (and kind of still do) play The Sims and I would frequently visit the websites that allowed users to DL different objects to make the game more interesting.
One problem people who create things for online games or for example Apps for Facebook is that if an idea is really good the company itself goes and creates the same thing and the original creator is never credited.
But with that being said a lot of progress has been made in games and websites due to users taking the risk to create things that will eventually be stolen.
Although I can't speak to the gamer aspect, I know what you mean about the "personal touch" UGC adds (sorry for the acronym!). And for a select few, UGC gives people the opportunity to really stand out. I feel like you become much more involved in websites and games when you have the opportunity to contribute. It allows users to take websites and games and really make them their own. Despite the acronym, UGC does rock.

This is getting out of hand. This post is hysterical because it is so true with all of the acronyms. The former-Cingular (now AT&T), as seen above, is capitalizing on it which is hysterical.
More about the topic of the week though...as you and Sarah mentioned, it is interesting to think about Half-Life (and the subsequent Half-Life 2) utilizing UGC because that was something I had never thought about before. While I had only played the former rather than the Second (I need to get a PC instead of a Mac to do that...which will probably never happen), it is interesting to think that you can build your own maps to play on as UGC. Muy interesante. Perhaps the reason that I never got into any version/expansion pack of The Sims is because I thought that it was too much UGC. Imagine that...while I am mainly falling out of the video game era, save few exceptions (Halo series, and old systems such as the Nintendo 64, NES and SNES), it could be because there is so much user comparability. This almost causes a huge paradox in the system. Then again, maybe the Sims series is just ruining it for everyone...
I agree with you Tim. I mentioned in my blog as well the idea of using so many diffferent names while serving the same idea. This makes it really unattractive to me. I'm not really into games so I don't think I can add anything more(sorry).
I completely agree with you about the acronyms.. first of all, I don’t even know what half of these mean, but people are constantly using them in all types of conversations. I think that by trying to make our lives easier in this fast paced way of life that we have we are losing our ability to speak properly and ruining the English language.
